Thousands of Protesters Demand Putin Backward

Moscow - Tens of thousands of demonstrators anti-government march in Moscow on Tuesday, rejecting the legitimacy of President Vladimir Putin. They demanded new elections, a leading opposition leader said.

"We believe that the current presidency is not legitimate at all," said former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov on CNN. He said the elections in March which was won after four years of Putin was prime minister was "not free, not fair and the results are not credible".

The only thing to do Putin now, he says, is "to sit with us at the negotiating table to discuss the terms and conditions of his departure," said Kasyanov.

International observers said the elections in March did not meet international standards. The presidential election occurred just months after allegations of fraud in parliamentary elections that encourage anti-government demonstrations in Russia's largest in two decades.

Kasyanov called for street demonstrations were more likely to increase pressure on Putin. But he menegasksn opposition will not mimic the Arab Spring.

"The best way just a peaceful protest in the streets," he said. "We wanted something like what happened at the end of the '80s in Eastern Europe, when the communist regime collapsed without violence."

More than 250 people arrested during the demonstration, including leading opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, leader of the radical left wing Sergei Udaltsov, and popular blogger Alexei Navalny.

In March, Putin won the presidential election with almost 65 percent of the vote. International observers say there is uncertainty about the valid votes.
