Turkish PM vows to Boost Relations with Finland

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Turkey and Finland are eager to improve relations in all fields.

Speaking during a joint press conference with his visiting Finnish Prime Jyrki Tapani Katainen after their official talks in the Turkish capital, Ankara, Erdogan said, "we confirm that we will deepen with our relationship and cooperation in the fields of military, political, economic, trade and culture. "


Erdogan said the talks with Katainen focused on designing new ways to develop the relationship further and take solid steps for future cooperation, especially in economic relations.

Erdogan said the trade volume between Turkey and Finland when it is about 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2011.

He added that the figures did not reflect the true potential of both countries.

Erdogan also said he appreciates Finland's readiness to enhance cooperation and share experience with Turkey in renewable and nuclear energy.

Meanwhile, Katainen said, "Turkey has taken the role of mediator in many of the issues challenging in the region such as Syria and Iran.

"We wish to contribute to Turkey's bid as the best way we can and we expect to lead the European Union, to support Turkey as well."


Katainen said many European countries share the belief that Turkey's EU family, and added the importance of Turkey for the development and expansion of the European Union just as Finland did.

"No matter which country assumed the rotating presidency of the EU officials. Future of Turkey and the EU will cross some point. Constraints and delays may come along the way. But we must keep going forward," said Katainen.
