Rio de Janeiro - Palestine encouraged to become full as a state representative at the UN 20th Rio Summit on sustainable development, but this issue should be decided by world leaders next week, officials said.
"We expect full participation status because we already have in UNESCO and we have a relationship with Brazil (the host country to recognize a Palestinian state) and with more than 130 countries," said Palestinian Ambassador Ibrahim Alzeben told AFP.
The problem is the result of disagreement among UN delegates.
Palestine Liberation Organization have observer status at the United Nations and the Palestinians are also encouraged to gain full membership in the agency.
"There are discussions" about the issue, and "no clarity" about how the Palestinians should be represented, said Nikhil Seth, head of Sustainable Development at the United Nations.
The official pointed to two resolutions adopted by the UN for the meeting, one by the UN General Assembly held a Rio 20 and give observer status to the Palestinians and others used in the past that allow the participation of observers as the country on several occasions.
The final decision will be made on procedural sessions as Rio 20 summit was officially opened on Wednesday, Pragati Pascale, a spokesman for the UN conference.
The Palestinian people has been a member of UNESCO since October, although the decision was opposed by the United States and Israel.

Alzeben, who announced that the Palestinian delegation will be headed by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki.
