Mitt Romney, Republican presidential candidate, received a standing ovation at a conservative Christian university, when he was defending traditional marriage between a man and woman.
Romney is often considered with skepticism by most conservative Republican, and in a speech to the graduates of Liberty University in Virginia, he emphasized the importance of personal belief and commitment to family.
A few days before U.S. President Barack Obama expressed support for the legalization of same-sex marriage in America.
Obama's support for same-sex marriage is a controversy in America where the six states and the District of Columbia have laws that allow men to marry other men and so are women. But 31 states prohibit such marriages.
A survey shows that across countries the acceptance of gay marriage is gaining acceptance and is now a majority by a small margin tends to support this.
But the survey also showed a political divide, where Democrats like Obama, strongly supported same-sex marriage, while most Republicans opposed it. Young voters are also more accepting of it as old age voters rejected it.
Obama, who will face Romney in the November election, tried to exploit this issue to energize supporters and raise funds. But he did not discuss this issue in his weekly radio address Saturday.
